[...] In Part 1 of Malus Sylvestris Migration I went over some basic differences between Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows. Basic configuration, Application installation, and linking were discussed. In this, the second installment, I intend to cover some more interesting features.
hi cwright,

just read your first steps with mac. first: forget the finder; it's ok for basic working, i find it to be even better than windows explorer and more customizable but in the long run it kinda slows you down.
i have been searching for some alternative or at least some enhancements for the finder, and i tried a looot of apps, add-ons and stuff.
eventually i found something that is nearly perfect. it's called quicksilver and can be seen as a partial replacement for finder. it's quite difficult to explain this app and i found the learning curve a bit steep, but as soon as you get the curve, you won't be able to function without it. it's really fabulous and the possibilities are literally infinite (since you can write your own scripts for it). try it out and don't give up (as i did at first) if you don't understand it from the very beginning. it's a bit unconventional but really useful.

cheers

Oh I am enjoying it :) It's been 3 or 4 weeks now, and the only real gripe I have is the weakness of Finder. I don't have many windows habits; I haven't been a desktop windows user for several years (2000 ish?). I do have lots of Linux habits though. I don't have "lots" of shortcuts, but I do like to keep stuff I access frequently available on the desktop. This is super-handy when you press F11, for example, to reveal the desktop. For the record, right now I only have my home directory aliased on the desktop. That and 1 other folder are all I need for quick access.

Thanks for the comment! And the links too! :) I thought the curve would be considerably more steep than it actually turned out to be.

OSX is easy and intuitive. Enjoy it!... just get rid of your Windows habits. You don´t really need all these "shorcuts" (alias in mac slang) in the desktop, for example :)

And yes, mac or not mac, unibutton sux bad. I use a good cheap logitech with my MacBook Pro.

Finally, some evidence. Unfortunately, 1 is still a poor sample set :) But to be serious, unibutton has always bothered me. *shrugs* Something about low digit-to-input ratios or something. If it works for you, do it! :)
